2015 Program Schedule

 

January 21: Member Presentations: Geert Meganck will give a short presentation on his design for the Queensway Carleton Hospital Community Project. Also,Colin DeSousa and Lynn Shepard and Jeff Roland of Yards Unlimited will tell you about their experiences on building their ponds.

 

February 18: Zenscaping: Japanese garden design using water with Rebecca Cragg of Camellia Teas of Ottawa.

 

Imagine sitting in a stunning, peaceful garden, beautifully balanced in its asymmetry, mysterious and intriguing to explore. Using traditional principles of Japanese Garden design, Rebecca Cragg will introduce ways to incorporate some ‘Zenscaping with water into your Ottawa garden space. Participants will learn concrete ideas to apply immediately into their gardens, sources of materials and lists of plants to add a little touch of Japan to make your garden a place of peace and tranquility.

 

March 18: Flying dragons and damsels that cause distress with Michael Runtz. "Dragonflies and damselflies are among the fiercest preditors on this planet." This highly visual presentation will reveal insights into their lives and the lives of other animals that share their world.

 

April 15: Travel Log presented by Cathi & Michael Fournier on Longwood Gardens, located in the Brandywine Valley, 30 minutes west of Philadelphia. Massive gardens covering 1,077 acres and a 4 acre conservatory, was founded by Pierre S. du Pont. Every season is something new. Check out this video.

 

May 20: ‘Beautiful Plants to Dress Up Your Water Garden’ with David Dunn, Rideau Woodland Ramble

 

June 10: NOTE DATE CHANGE - Off Site (for members only) - Private garden of Donna and Antony Ham Pong. See Ottawa Citizen Article

 

July and August: No Meetings

 

September 16: NCC landscape architect Tina Liu will take us on a tour the NCC Gardens at Commissioner's Park (Dow's Lake). The tour begins at 6:00 when the light is better. She will start at parking lot side of Preston and Prince of Wales, leading us through the various 30 planting beds in that area. OFF SITE - 

 

October 21: Annual General Meeting and "Building a Koi Pond" with Verne Gilkes. Verne will be talking about building ponds specifically designed for koi fish. He will also talk about the construction of his own pond, which turned out to be a journey over several years. Verne will discuss the pros and cons of what he did, including what he should have done and what he wouldn’t do again.
